Course Content:
Our Qualitative Respirator Fit Testing adheres to the CSA Standard Z94.4-18, encompassing fit testing, as well as the selection, use, and maintenance of respirators (Z94.4-02). The program includes a minimum instructional component, the duration of which depends on the respirator type. Following this, a qualitative fit test is conducted using precise irritant smoke test methods.
The training covers essential topics such as regulatory requirements and wearer responsibilities in PPE usage, proper donning and doffing of respirators, care and maintenance procedures, including cleaning and sanitizing. Participants learn about the limitations of different respirators, inspection protocols, compatibility with other PPE, conducting seal/pressure checks, recognizing respiratory hazards, and guidance on selecting filters or cartridges based on the intended use of the respirator.
At Hightower Safety, we prioritize the use of the most accurate qualitative fit testing methods available.
Training and Fit Testing Guidelines:
Under the CSA Standards and in accordance with our OH&S Act and Regulations, qualitative respirator fit tests and PPE training must be undertaken every 2 years. Exceptions to this biennial schedule include instances where an individual changes jobs, experiences significant weight loss or gain, sustains a facial injury, changes or is requested to change respirators, or when workplace hazards are reassessed. In such cases, a fit test is mandatory. If uncertain, refer to the respirator's user manual for manufacturer-recommended guidelines, particularly if the two-year timeframe is not met.
In Preparation for your Fit Test:
Candidates are required to be clean-shaven within 16 hours, adhering to CSA Standards, to undergo fit testing.
Remove facial jewelry or any items that create a barrier between the skin and the respirator.
Fit tests are conducted on specific makes and models of respirators, not on the entire category.
