Course Content:

Our Qualitative Respirator Fit Testing program follows CSA Standard Z94.4-18 and includes both hands-on training and a qualitative fit test using irritant smoke methods.

Topics covered include:

  • Regulatory requirements and worker responsibilities

  • Proper donning, doffing, and seal/pressure checks

  • Respirator care, cleaning, and maintenance

  • Limitations of different respirator types

  • Compatibility with other PPE

  • Recognizing respiratory hazards

  • Selecting appropriate filters and cartridges

In Preparation for your Fit Test:

  1. Candidates are required to be clean-shaven within 16 hours, adhering to CSA Standards, to undergo fit testing.

  2. Remove facial jewelry or any items that create a barrier between the skin and the respirator.

  3. Fit tests are conducted on specific makes and models of respirators, not on the entire category.

Training and Fit Testing Guidelines

Under CSA Standards and in accordance with Ontario's OH&S Act and Regulations, qualitative respirator fit tests and PPE training must be completed every 2 years. A fit test is also required when a worker:

  • Changes jobs or respirator models

  • Experiences significant weight loss or gain

  • Sustains a facial injury

  • Has their workplace hazards reassessed

If uncertain, refer to the respirator's user manual for manufacturer-recommended guidelines.

  • O. Reg. 213/91, sections 21, 26 and 93 under the Occupational Health and Safety Act

  • O. Reg. 490/09 (2019) under the Occupational Health and Safety Act - Medical Surveillance for Designated Substances *New for January 2020

  • O. Reg. 449/19 Occupational Exposure Limits (OEL)

  • OHS Act and Regulations that pertain to the use of respirators, multiple sections of the green book. Anyone required to wear a respirator on the job is required to be trained in it's use and have a fit test at least every two years.
